Future Simple Tense

The Future Simple tense, also known as the Simple Future, is used to describe actions or events that will happen in the future. This tense is commonly used in everyday conversation, as well as in written and spoken communication.

The verb form of a Future Simple sentence, use the auxiliary verb will and the bare infinitive (verb without to) of the main verb.

For example: I will play…, She will be…, They will pay

You can contract this tense by combining the subject and the auxiliary verb will.

For example: I’ll play…, She’ll play… They’ll pay…

When to Use Future Simple Tense

We use the Future Simple tense to talk about the future, but we can use it for slightly different occasions.

Use it for future facts or confident predictions

We can use the Future Simple to talk about things that will happen or predictions we’re confident will happen.

The sun will rise at 5:30am tomorrow.

It will get dark in an hour.

Liverpool will win the Premier League this year.

Use it to make promises

If you intend to do something you can use this tense to make the promise.

I‘ll go with her.

I will help you decorate your room.

He will take us to the match.

Use it to make a spontaneous decision

We can use Future Simple when we make a spontaneous decision. This is usually because something has happened.

It’s hot now. I will take my coat off.

He’s lost his guitar. I‘ll lend him mine.

It’s a bit loud in here. I will turn the music down.

Use it with a First Conditional

We use the Future Perfect tense when we use a First Conditional. This is when we say something will happen in the future if something happens before it.

It has 2 clauses: the if clause with a Present Simple verb, and the main clause will be Future Simple.

If it snows, it will be difficult getting to work.

If you study hard, you will pass your exam.

We will go to the beach if the weather is nice.

Use it to make commands

The Future Simple tense can be used to make commands.

You will do as I say.

You will study more or you will be grounded.

You will hand in your essay by Friday or you will lose some marks.
