Learning grammar is essential for mastering any language, and tenses are a fundamental aspect of grammar. Two of the most commonly used tenses in English are the present simple and past simple.

The present simple tense is used to describe things like habitual actions, facts, or permanent situations, while the past simple tense describes actions and states that have already happened in the past.

To help your students practice and improve their understanding of these tenses, we have created a packet of 10 Present Simple and Past Simple worksheets that allow you to practice converting affirmative and negative sentences from present to past, as well as question form.

Present and Past Simple Worksheets

Let’s take a look at what’s inside the worksheet package:

Worksheet 1 – Present Simple or Past Simple (Affirmative): This worksheet gives you both the present and past simple answer. your students have to determine from the time reference which tense to write.

Worksheet 2 – Present Simple S Rule: One of the most common mistakes new students make is forgetting the S Rule for third person singular (he/she/it). In this worksheet, they get to practice all variations of the verb ending in the present simple.

Worksheet 3 – Present Simple or Past Simple: Similar to worksheet 1, but the answer isn’t given. The base verb is given, but your students need to determine the verb tense and then how to form it.

Worksheet 4 – Present to Past Simple Word Search: Irregular verbs are tricky, but your students must memorize them. This word search includes the 20 most common irregular verbs. The clue is in the present simple, but they have to find the past simple form in the word search.

Worksheet 5 – Present Simple Routines: Routines are the most common use case of the present simple, and your students have to fill in the gap for either the affirmative or negative form in present simple.

Worksheet 6 – Past Simple for History: Your students will determine what the past tense is for the given verb, and best of all will learn some history along the way.

Worksheet 7 – Change of Routine: This worksheets shows Pete’s typical Saturdays, and also what he did the last Saturday. There are questions about them and your studetns have to find the answers and write a full sentence answer in either present tense or past tense.

Worksheet 8 – Affirmative to Negative: Students will practice both tenses in the negative form. Positive sentences are given and your students get to practice how to make them negative.

Worksheet 9 – Negative Present Simple or Past Simple? More practice with making negative sentences. this time, students have to determine which tense it should be and write the correct verb form in the gap fill.

Worksheet 10 – Sentence to Question: For the last worksheet, your students will practice converting sentences into yes/no questions. Answers are in either present simple or past simple, so your students have to work out from the context.
